The BROOKVILLE ARMY RAIL CAR Restoration Project

This railcar was built in Brookville, PA by the Brookville Locomotive Company for the U.S. Army in 1940. It is powered by a Hercules 4-cylinder diesel, with a Ford 4-speed transmission and Brookville "Type C" final chain drive. After the final drive gearing was damaged in the 1960's, the unit was sold to a surplus dealer and remained there through 2000.

1940's Brookville Army Rail Car built in PA by the Brookville Locomotive Company for the US Army - now under restoration.

After 35+ idle years, the unit needs a complete rebuild. Chapter member John Fishovitz has provided a garage stall at J. F. Mill and Lumber and heavy restoration begin in January of 2006.

  • The overall project has been divided into smaller units: UPDATED 10/2007

    * Brakes:  Manual brakes disassembled, cleaned and reinstalled. Power brake cylinder cleaned.

  • * Final Drive:  Replacement gears (Ford 1 1/2 ton truck), bearings, and grease seals have been acquired and rebuild started. (Fall 2007)

  • * Motor: Test run 8-23-2006. Starter and generator already rebuilt.
    Decided to replace valves, head gasket, fuel lines. Currently being
    reassembled. (Summer 2007)

  • * Transmission: New clutch to be installed as part of overall rebuild. Overhauled at Dwayne Hiers Transmissions (Pittsburgh)
    and ready to reinstall.

  • * Frame: Rear portions cleaned and ready for paint. Damaged front channel removed. Damaged front channel replaced, remainder of frame cleaned and painted. Coupling mounts are in process. Cowcatcher is to be rebuilt,
    or replaced. Step brackets are ready to install. (Summer 2007)

  • Cowcatcher is to be rebuilt, or replaced. Step brackets are on order. (Early 2007)

  • * Sanding boxes: Three were fabricated to replaced rusted out parts. Mechanism to be fabricated. (Fall 2007)

  • * Floor: Wooden floor will be replaced with all new material (2007/8)

  • * Front/Back walls: New walls will be fabricated in 2008 using the badly rusted originals as patterns.

  • * Roof: Minor repairs needed at edges, sandblasting, and new roof coating (2008)..

To help support the restoration of our 1940 Brookville rail gang car that was originally built for the U.S. Army, the chapter has had a limited number of dog tags produced that are available for a minimum $5.00 donation.

The dog tags include a key ring, are marked "Proud Supporter, 1940 Brookville Army Gang Car, 'Returning to Active Duty" on one side and carry the chapter logo on the other. Each is individually numbered, and many numbers between 50 and 99 are still available if you want a particular number.

Proceeds benefit the ongoing restoration of the car.
