The group purchased and restored a railroad tower, called the UN Tower because of its location near Union Valley Road. The tower, once located near the train station, was moved into Mahoningtown, PA.
The BVJC hosted a day of railroad events in conjunction with the Mahoningtown Community Day on Sunday, August 14, 2005 to raise funds to restore this Un Tower Building. Below is the announcement for that event. The UN Tower location (click for map) will be the site of train rides in vintage cabooses, speeder car rides, railroad equipment & model train displays, vendors, a food booth and more. Nearby Darlington Park will feature more of the Mahoningtown Days Festival, including arts and crafts, live entertainment and more food booths.Train rides and other BVJC events will run from 11 AM to 4 PM. The train ride lasts about a half hour, and the fare is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 2 to 10. The BVJC has participated in this event for several years and it is always fun. So please stop by and bring the family; there will be something for everyone and it's a great chance to find out what the BVJC is all about and what we do. (The monthly chapter meeting will be held at UN Tower following the festival. You need not be a member to attend.)
Chapter is restoring West
Pittsburg Station
The Beaver Valley Junction Chapter is now the new owner of the former P&LE station at West Pittsburg, PA (just south of CSX's New Castle yard).
The chapter has plans to restore the station and reopen it as a railroad museum. The station was built in 1907, and saw its last passenger train in 1964. The building has been vacant and unused for decades; vandals and the ravages of time and the elements have taken their toll, although much of the original woodwork and tile floors remain largely intact. A lot of money and even more hard work will be required to restore it. However, when we reach our goal and the station reopens as a museum, it will serve as a valuable resource for preserving the railroad history of Western Pennsylvania.
Sundays frequently see cleanup and other work taking place at the station, and other events at the station will be announced on the front page of this website. Volunteers and donations (in the form of money, time, or expertise) are always welcome and greatly appreciated.
