1907 West Pittsburg Station

Train arriving at the West Pittsburgh Station in PA.

Restoration Project - see Work Schedule Below

Ellwood City Ledger Article

Interior of West Pittsburgh Station control center for incoming & outgoing trains.     1907 West Pittsburgh Station as it looked in this hand colored lithograph.

In 1907 an arts and crafts style railroad station was designed and built to service the traveling public. Its solid stone exterior and red sloping roof with two dormers and extended overhang allowed the public a place to wait outside with protection from the snow, rain or sun. It was well suited for the public inside as well and a comforting place to wait for the train. Years passed and one day the trains came no more leaving this wonderful old building deserted and in disrepair. The roof started to leak and the once welcoming overhang became a dangerous place to stand as supported beams rotted and decayed. This sad situation was well noted by the members of the Beaver Valley Junction Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Years passed and the Chapter successfully restored the Union Tower by 2005, but how to begin this daunting task of restoration for this fine old station with just volunteers and hardly any funds? Help came in many ways so we are listing the articles and progress here for you to read about and hopefully join in with your donations and your time. Please read our NEWS for restoration events plus purchase our new T-Shirt (our newest fundraiser). If you want to preserve history like we do, please come by and find out how much FUN we have working together and what a joy it is to see the results!

May 30, 2006 REPORT ON STATION WORK from George Alberti

We have started some work for the summer. The station's grounds are being cut now on a regular basis, and the site looks great! The cellar steps were repaired, mainly because we are storing so much down there. We are planning on opening up all doors this year, for ease of reconstruction operations.

The organization has almost 3,000 board feet of lumber, when it comes in it will be immediately used to continue work on the building's overhang. However, we will need to utilize some of it to replace any bad wood where needed.

The building came through the winter and our wet spring this year in good shape. We do have one stubborn small leak still in the agents office, but the rest of the station has remained dry. In fact, it is dry to the extent that old plaster and such is drying out so much that some of it is coming down own its own, saving us some removal effort. Our goal for this year is to try to get electric service reestablished into the building. Hopefully, we can get some electricians as volunteers to help us with wiring.

There is so much that needs to be done, and only so much that we can do. We have recently added eight new members, who are mainly interested in helping out with the reconstruction. We're hoping to get more local professional businesses, such as plumbers, electricians, heating specialists involved with the project, as well.

Hopefully, some of the people reading this will become either involved with our efforts, or attend our fundraising events.

Thanks,  George Alberti
